The fourth installment in Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise, Transformers: Age of Extinction tries to rejuvenate the series by focusing on new characters and a new storyline, but the end result is basically just more of the same.
The film picks up a few years after the battle of Chicago that ended the last movie. The world is still dealing with the aftermath of the Transformers arrival on Earth, with governments trying to track down and destroy the remaining Decepticons/Megatron loyalists. The U.S. government has convinced the public that all Autobots are evil, with the exception of the movie’s hero Optimus Prime who’s now in hiding.
Enter Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), an inventor trying to make ends meet in rural Texas. He discovers a truck that’s actually Optimus Prime who’s been damaged and in need of repair. Cade brings Prime back to life, and along with his daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz) and her secret race car driver boyfriend Shane (Jack Reynor), they set out to protect the transformed Autobot leader from CIA Director Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer).
Age of Extinction introduces the Dinobots and also has Stanley Tucci as a tech billionaire who’s working with Attinger to create new Transformers for the government. Tucci’s character provides the film’s one-liners and a bit of comic relief to what’s otherwise a mostly humorless, action-packed, overly long, and plot-challenged film.
There are way too many moving parts in this unnecessarily complicated plot, and
Overall, Transformers: Age of Extinction is exactly what fans of the series are expecting. There’s action, explosions, and giant robots duking it out with each other. It’s also loud, over-the-top, and occasionally just plain silly. The performances are fine within the context of the film, and Michael Bay knows how to shoot an action scene. But it’s all just a bit too much and a bit too familiar.
The $210+ million dollar production looks impressive, but fans of the franchise have seen this show before and with a 2 hour and 45 minute running time, it all becomes a bit too much. Transformers: Age of Extinction lacks heart and soul and is just a loud, brash, visually stunning (in Imax 3D) action film.
The Transformers franchise, at least for fans of the series, is critic-proof. They’ll head out in droves to see Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, and they’ll love every minute of it.
